Personality;
Raised by a mother that taught him to be kind to other people since he started to walk, Ethan is an approachable guy. He is an individual that has an easy time making conversations with almost anyone and is almost always adaptable in a lot of situations, or at least he tries to make the best of a situation.
While he may sound insensitive when he's being honest, he's not doing it to be mean to you, by any means. He just isn't one to "beat around the bush". That is one of his biggest pet peeves. So he's always been a forward person.
His easy-going nature made it easy for him to get along with his childhood friend Lyra, whom was always more outgoing more than him. However, that doesn't mean that he's any less social. He's more than willing to greet you with a smile. Even though he was timid and had to come out of his shell by Lyra when he was a kid, Ethan was a kid who loved to smile and make others smile. He still likes being that kind of person, to this day.
Instead of being jealous or bitter of other people getting their pokemon before him, which happened a lot during his childhood, a young Ethan was nothing but hopeful for the day he would have a partner of his own. His waiting pays off because he gets a pokemon of his own, finally. That's where HGSS begins.
This shows Ethan's uncanny ability to be optimistic. He tries find hope in places where many won't think they'll find it.
Ethan (or Lyra, if she's selected as the protagonist.) is one of the only pokemon protagonists that let their pokemon walk with them, in-game. The first pokemon lined up in your party walks with you. There is also a side-event within the canon called the Pokeathalon (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9athlon) which requires three of your pokemon to be a team. And since Ethan wears athlete clothes for the event, he is an active athlete right alongside his pokemon.
This implies that bonds (with both people and pokemon) mean a lot to Ethan, out of all the other protagonists; Bonds are a big deal for him.
"We're in this together." is just one of the ways his mind works.
When it comes to being a trainer, bonds with his pokemon are just as important as getting stronger, if not more. Ethan sees his pokemon the way people see their own friends and/or family. They're not just pokemon; to Ethan, his pokemon are his partners who are in this journey, together.
That is why if anyone asked Ethan "Isn't it lonely traveling by yourself?" the boy will answer something similar to:
"But I'm never alone."
Sometimes his curiousity could get him into potential trouble. His encounters with Team Rocket (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Team_Rocket) are a good example of Ethan putting his nose into things that didn't need it, but he chooses to, anyway. His willing to stop the wrong-doings of Team Rocket shows his willingness to want to help if he is able to. (He has stopped Team Rocket's plans throughout his journey.)
When it comes to judgement, Ethan is all for being fair. He is also the type who will try to look for a redeeming point in someone when others are quick to judge that person. He has done this with Silver, his rival whom he got to learn more about on his journey. Ethan is also the reason why Silver started to learn that his own opinion on pokemon was flawed. Where Ethan thought bonds are important, Silver thought bonds don't matter and that pokemon were merely weapons that are just supposed to listen to him.
Each time Ethan had his battles with Silver, throughout the journey, Silver was getting closer and closer to realizing that maybe pokemon DO deserve kindness; which is exactly what Ethan was trying to get through to him. The progress is slow, but Ethan will have as many battles as it takes for Silver to finally get it, someday. The two boys eventually battle as a team against gym leader Claire and Johto Champion Lance; that is also proof that Ethan made an impact on his rival, as Silver was not a person who liked teamwork.
This shows Ethan's ability to be patient with people, especially with situations or with people that anyone else would normally give up on.
Unfortunately, this also means people can take advantage of Ethan's kindness. Despite that fault/weakness, Ethan is also someone who won't let something like that happen twice. He is still strong-willed enough to do something about it if he has been wronged.
While people may find him forming a friendship with Silver to be an odd idea (Lyra reminded him of how Silver treated him before.), Ethan ignored those opinions (he did appreciate Lyra's concern, though.) and kept in touch with Silver and tried to make a bond with the redhead. Ethan is just a persistent person like that. He doesn't like to hold grudges for long. Also take note that his patience will only go so far and that he still has his limits.
He won't hesitate to speak up for someone who won't/can't. He won't hesitate to jump in and be a shield for people he cares about. That can be a good and destructive thing, regretfully.

[Ethan's first network post from Road to Viridian (http://roadtoviridian.livejournal.com/profile )]
[There is nothing but darkness and the noises of rustling for a couple of seconds until a Typhlosion comes into view, staring at the screen intently. His paw reaches at the screen, grabbing the PNG and he takes the gadget with him. Everything is one huge blur-in-motion for a moment.]
What the-? Hey! What are you doing?! That's not a berry!
[The voice is heard as the motion finally came to a halt as the PNG was grabbed from the pokemon.]
Huh. So I still had this with me the whole time? At least I didn't lose it.
I wanted to save the introducing for when I returned.... I may as well do it, since it's on and running.
[Ethan finally comes into view. Judging from the surroundings around him, you can tell that he is inside the Poffin House and he already finished a batch or two of poffins. Just realizing that he is recording, he took his sleeve and wiped off the little bit of poffin mixture/batter on his cheek. He gives the camera his usual easy-going smile and makes a small wave.]
Nice to meet ya! Ethan's the name. And I'm a trainer from New Bark Town. A long way from home, right now, I know. But Sinnoh sure has been an experience!
Although a traveling companion who is more familiar with this place would be great for next time. 'Cause the getting-lost part wasn't so fun.
[It is likely that some viewers might pay some attention to the Typhlosion in the background. It is sniffing at a poffin and then eats one from the plate. His eyes widen and he makes a face as he unhappily swallows his master's "creation". The fire-pokemon then glared/growled at the poffins and grabbed the entire plate, beginning to walk away from the camera's view. He re-appears a few seconds later, the plate empty. Ethan is oblivious to his partner's actions as he still focused on the screen.]
So I heard there was some kind of get-together for the release of these things? I sure couldn't make it. Er... Let's just say that I got so caught up in exploring Sinnoh that I missed the last cruise back to Johto. After a few days of waiting, the ship comes back tommorow first thing in the morning.
In the mean time, I could watch some contests. I'd like to see if they're any different than the ones in Hoenn!
[Ethan looks back to his Typhlosion and noticed the empty plate and puts on a bigger smile and laughs.] If you liked it that much, I could make us some more for the trip back.
[Unfortunately, before the Typhlosion could express his best "Do not want!" expression, Ethan had already turned back to the screen. Once again, oblivious to his pokemon's reaction.]
Hm... What else... Well. That'll do for now. I'm bound to easily break this in, anyway.
Till next time! [He presses a button and the connection ends here.]
